Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa, standing at 5,895 meters above sea level. It is located in the northern part of Tanzania near the border with Kenya. The mountain is famous for its snow-capped summit, even though it is close to the equator.
Mount Kilimanjaro is a stratovolcano, meaning it was formed through layers of volcanic ash, lava, and rock from past eruptions. The mountain has three volcanic cones: Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira. Among these, Kibo is the tallest and is considered dormant, while Mawenzi and Shira are extinct volcanoes.

Climbers can reach the summit through six main routes, which provide different trekking experiences. These routes are Marangu, Machame, Rongai, Lemosho, Umbwe, and Shira. The time required to reach the summit and descend usually takes five days or more, depending on the route chosen and the climber’s pace.
Mount Kilimanjaro has five distinct climatic zones as climbers move from the base to the summit. These zones include the bushland zone, rainforest zone, moorland zone, alpine desert zone, and arctic zone at the top.
Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro can be done throughout the year, although certain months offer better weather conditions for trekking.
