14 Days – Lemosho Kilimanjaro & Tanzania Safari

Climb Mt. Kilimanjaro through Lemosho Route

The Lemosho Route is one of the most scenic and rewarding trails on Mount Kilimanjaro, approaching the mountain from the western side. Renowned for its beautiful landscapes and quieter trails, the route begins in lush rainforest before progressing through heath and moorland, alpine desert, and rugged high-altitude terrain. Along the way, trekkers enjoy spectacular views of Kibo Peak and the surrounding mountain landscapes.
Known for its gradual ascent and excellent opportunities for acclimatization, the Lemosho Route allows trekkers to experience the diverse ecological zones of Kilimanjaro at a comfortable pace. The trail crosses the scenic Shira Plateau before joining the southern circuit toward the summit, eventually leading to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, for an unforgettable Mount Kilimanjaro trekking experience with LandAfrica.

Daily Itinerary

Day 1: Kilimanjaro International Airport to Arusha
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, meet your LandAfrica driver for a comfortable transfer to Arusha, taking approximately 45–60 minutes. As you travel, enjoy your first impressions of northern Tanzania, with scenic landscapes and glimpses of local life along the way.
On arrival at your lodge in Arusha, take time to unwind and settle in after your journey. Enjoy a relaxed dinner and a peaceful overnight stay as you prepare for your upcoming Lemosho Route Kilimanjaro adventure and Tanzania safari.

Day 2: Arusha to Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp
After breakfast in Arusha, depart for Londorossi Gate, enjoying a scenic 3–4-hour drive through changing landscapes and local villages. Upon arrival, complete the necessary registration before continuing by vehicle to the Lemosho Route trailhead. Enjoy a hot lunch before setting out on your first day of trekking on Mount Kilimanjaro.
The trail begins gently through the lush Kilimanjaro rainforest, surrounded by towering trees, moss-covered vegetation, and the sounds of forest birdlife. Keep an eye out for monkeys as you gradually make your way deeper into the forest. After approximately 2–3 hours of hiking, arrive at Mti Mkubwa Camp, where you can relax, enjoy dinner, and spend the night.

Day 3: Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 1 Camp
After breakfast at Mti Mkubwa Camp, continue your ascent along the Lemosho Route as the dense rainforest gradually gives way to open heath and moorland. The landscape becomes more rugged, with tall grasses, heather, and volcanic rocks surrounding the trail. Cross small streams and follow the rolling terrain at a steady pace, enjoying increasingly expansive views as you gain altitude. On clear days, you may catch your first impressive glimpse of Kibo Peak rising ahead.
The trek takes approximately 5–6 hours, allowing plenty of time to appreciate the changing scenery of Mount Kilimanjaro. Upon reaching Shira 1 Camp, enjoy a hot lunch and take some time to relax and acclimatize before dinner and an overnight stay in the beautiful Shira Plateau area.

Day 4: Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp
After breakfast at Shira 1 Camp, continue your Lemosho Route trek across the expansive Shira Plateau. This section features a mostly gentle and gradual trail, allowing you to maintain a comfortable pace while enjoying the wide-open mountain scenery. As you cross the plateau, the landscape becomes increasingly rugged, with scattered vegetation and volcanic rocks beneath your feet. On clear days, Kibo Peak appears closer, creating an impressive backdrop for the journey.
The hike takes approximately 3–4 hours, giving you time to appreciate the peaceful surroundings and spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro. Upon reaching Shira 2 Camp, enjoy a hot lunch before taking time to rest and acclimatize. Later, settle in for dinner and an overnight stay on the scenic Shira Plateau.

Day 5: Shira 2 Camp to Barranco Camp
After breakfast at Shira 2 Camp, continue your Lemosho Route adventure with an important acclimatization day on Mount Kilimanjaro. Trek for approximately 4–5 hours across the open moorland, gradually ascending toward Lava Tower, the highest point of the day. Reaching this elevation provides an excellent opportunity to help your body adjust to the increasing altitude while enjoying spectacular views across the surrounding mountain landscape.
After a hot lunch at Lava Tower, begin a 2–3-hour descent into the scenic Barranco Valley. As you lose altitude, the landscape changes once again, with unique high-altitude plants and dramatic volcanic scenery along the trail. Arrive at Barranco Camp, beautifully positioned beneath the impressive Barranco Wall, where you can relax, enjoy dinner, and spend the night.

Day 6: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
After breakfast at Barranco Camp, begin the day with a short descent into a ravine before reaching the impressive Barranco Wall. Climb steadily up the wall along a non-technical trail, making this one of the most memorable sections of the Lemosho Route. From the top, enjoy spectacular views across the surrounding landscape, often with clouds stretching below and Kibo Peak rising dramatically ahead.
Continue through a series of ridges and valleys, following a trail of gradual ascents and descents toward Karanga Camp. The 4–5-hour trek provides another valuable opportunity for acclimatization while allowing you to experience the changing landscapes of Mount Kilimanjaro. Upon arrival, enjoy a hot lunch and time to rest before dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 7: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
After breakfast at Karanga Camp, continue your steady ascent toward Barafu Camp, gradually entering the rugged alpine zone of Mount Kilimanjaro. The trail becomes increasingly rocky and exposed as vegetation fades with altitude, while impressive views of Mawenzi Peak and the surrounding valleys provide a spectacular backdrop. The changing environment is a clear reminder that you are approaching the high-altitude summit zone.
The trek takes approximately 3–4 hours, giving you time to reach camp, rest, and prepare for the final climb. At Barafu Camp, enjoy an early dinner, organize your summit equipment, and get some rest before waking around midnight for the challenging ascent to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.

Day 8: Barafu Camp tp Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
Today marks the ultimate highlight of your Mount Kilimanjaro trek as you begin your summit attempt. Wake around 23:00 for tea and biscuits before setting off at midnight under the night sky. Guided by headlamps, climb slowly and steadily through the cold and wind, taking short breaks as you gain altitude. Reach Stella Point on the crater rim around sunrise, where spectacular views of Mawenzi Peak await. From here, continue along the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, and celebrate this incredible achievement.
After enjoying time at the summit, begin the descent to Barafu Camp for a short rest and hot lunch. Continue downhill toward Mweka Camp, carefully navigating the rocky sections of the trail. By late afternoon, arrive at camp and take time to relax after this demanding day. Enjoy dinner and a well-earned overnight rest as you celebrate your successful Lemosho Route summit experience.

Day 9: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate to Arusha
After breakfast at Mweka Camp, begin the final descent of your Mount Kilimanjaro trek through the lush rainforest. Compared with the higher sections of the route, this is a more relaxed walk, although the trail may be wet and muddy in places. Take your time as you descend toward Mweka Gate, with the hike taking approximately 3–4 hours.
At Mweka Gate, receive your Kilimanjaro summit certificate and celebrate the successful completion of your Lemosho Route adventure. Continue by vehicle to Arusha, with the drive taking around two hours. On arrival at your lodge, relax and enjoy a celebratory dinner before settling in for a well-deserved overnight rest.

Day 10: Arusha to Tarangire National park
After breakfast in Arusha, enjoy a short safari briefing before departing for Tarangire National Park, with the journey taking approximately two hours. As you enter the park, the landscape opens into scenic grasslands dotted with impressive baobab trees, setting the stage for an exciting day of wildlife viewing.
Enjoy a packed lunch within the park before continuing with an afternoon Tarangire game drive. Keep watch for elephants, buffalo, giraffes, and other wildlife moving through the diverse landscapes. Later, leave the park and continue to your camp for dinner and an overnight stay, surrounded by the peaceful atmosphere of the Tanzania wilderness.

Day 11: Tarangire to Central Serengeti
After breakfast in Tarangire, depart for the legendary Serengeti National Park, with the drive taking approximately six hours. Along the way, the scenery gradually transforms as woodland and open landscapes give way to the vast grasslands of the Serengeti. As the endless plains come into view, the excitement of entering one of Tanzania’s most iconic safari destinations begins to build.
Enjoy a packed lunch before heading out on your first Serengeti game drive. Explore the open plains with opportunities to spot lions, hyenas, elephants, and large herds moving across the landscape. As the afternoon unfolds, continue toward your camp for dinner and an overnight stay surrounded by the remarkable Serengeti wilderness.

Day 12: Central Serengeti
After breakfast, set out for a full day of exploration across the vast plains of Serengeti National Park. With the entire day dedicated to a Serengeti game drive, each moment brings something different, from peaceful stretches of open grassland to exciting wildlife encounters. Keep watch for lions, cheetahs, and large herds moving across the plains as you explore with your guide.
Enjoy a packed lunch in the heart of the wilderness before continuing your afternoon game drive. As evening approaches, the warm golden light spreads across the Serengeti, creating a beautiful end to a day filled with wildlife and spectacular scenery. Later, return to camp for dinner and an overnight stay surrounded by the atmosphere of the Serengeti wilderness.

Day 13: Central Serengeti to Ngorongoro Crater
After breakfast in Serengeti National Park, head out for a final morning game drive, offering one more opportunity to enjoy the remarkable wildlife and sweeping landscapes before continuing your safari. As you leave the Serengeti behind, enjoy a packed lunch along the way while travelling toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.
The journey takes approximately 3.5 hours, with the scenery gradually changing as you approach the spectacular Ngorongoro Crater. Upon reaching the crater rim, take in the breathtaking panoramic view as the vast caldera unfolds below. By late afternoon, continue to your lodge for dinner and an overnight stay, surrounded by the unforgettable scenery of Ngorongoro.

Day 14: Ngorongoro Crater to Kilimanjaro International Airport
After an early breakfast, begin one of the final highlights of your Tanzania safari with a descent into the spectacular Ngorongoro Crater. The drive winds through forest before opening onto the vast crater floor, where an exciting Ngorongoro Crater game drive awaits. Explore the rich wildlife habitat with opportunities to see lions, elephants, buffalo, and, with some luck, the rare black rhino.
Enjoy a packed lunch surrounded by the remarkable scenery of the crater before beginning your journey to Kilimanjaro International Airport. The drive takes approximately five hours, giving you time to reflect on the unforgettable experiences, wildlife encounters, and landscapes that have shaped your Lemosho Kilimanjaro and Tanzania safari adventure with LandAfrica.
