Daily Itinerary
Day 1: Arusha – Kilimanjaro International Airport to Arusha
Description: The Machame Route on Mount Kilimanjaro is a scenic and adventurous 6- to 7-day trekking trail that begins on the southern slopes of the mountain. The route passes through lush rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and rugged high-altitude terrain before reaching Uhuru Peak, Africa’s highest point.
Day 2: Arusha to Machame Gate to Machame Camp
Description: After breakfast in Arusha, drive approximately two hours to Machame Gate, the starting point of your Mount Kilimanjaro Machame Route trek. Complete registration before enjoying lunch, then begin hiking into the lush montane rainforest.
Follow the winding trail through towering trees and dense vegetation, with opportunities to spot colourful birds and monkeys along the way. Continue at a comfortable pace toward Machame Camp, where you’ll enjoy dinner and settle in for the night.
Day 3: Machame Camp to Shira Caves
Description: After breakfast at Machame Camp, continue your Kilimanjaro Machame Route trek as the rainforest gradually gives way to rocky ridges and open heath and moorland. The trail climbs steadily through changing terrain, with small streams and expansive mountain views along the way.
Continue toward the Shira Plateau, where the landscape becomes more open and rugged. Arrive at Shira Caves Camp for a hot lunch and time to rest while enjoying views of the Western Breach and distant glaciers before dinner and overnight.
Day 4: Shira Caves to Barranco Camp
Description: After breakfast at Shira Caves Camp, continue your Mount Kilimanjaro Machame Route adventure through the open moorland toward Lava Tower. Gradually gain altitude as the scenery becomes more rugged and volcanic, reaching one of the highest points of the day.
After lunch, descend into the spectacular Barranco Valley, surrounded by unique high-altitude vegetation and dramatic mountain scenery. Arrive at Barranco Camp, positioned beneath the famous Barranco Wall, for dinner and overnight rest.
Day 5: Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp
Description: After breakfast at Barranco Camp, take on the iconic Barranco Wall, one of the most exciting sections of the Machame Route. The climb is non-technical, and your guide will support you as you make your way to the top, where spectacular views of the valley and Kibo Peak await.
Continue across a series of ridges and valleys toward Karanga Camp, where you’ll enjoy a hot lunch and short break. The trek then continues toward Barafu Camp, entering a rugged alpine landscape with little vegetation. After approximately 7–8 hours of trekking, arrive at camp, enjoy an early dinner, and rest in preparation for your Kilimanjaro summit climb.
Day 6: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
Description: Today is the highlight of your Mount Kilimanjaro trek. Begin the summit attempt around midnight, ascending through the darkness toward Stella Point on the crater rim. The climb is demanding, with cold temperatures and steep terrain, but the approaching sunrise makes the effort worthwhile.
From Stella Point, continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After celebrating your achievement and taking in the spectacular views, descend to Barafu Camp for a short rest and lunch before continuing to Mweka Camp. Enjoy dinner and a well-earned overnight rest after your summit day.
Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate to Arusha
Description: After breakfast at Mweka Camp, begin the final descent through the lush Kilimanjaro rainforest toward Mweka Gate. The trail is generally easier than the previous trekking days, although wet and muddy sections may require careful footing. After around 3–4 hours, arrive at Mweka Gate, where you can receive your official Mount Kilimanjaro summit certificate.
Continue by vehicle to Arusha, with the journey taking approximately two hours. Once at your lodge, take time to relax, celebrate your successful Kilimanjaro climb, and enjoy a well-earned dinner and restful evening.
Day 8: Arusha to Kilimanjaro International Airport
After breakfast in Arusha, depart for Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) by private transfer. The journey takes approximately 45–60 minutes, giving you a comfortable final drive through northern Tanzania before your flight.
Take a moment to reflect on your Mount Kilimanjaro adventure and the memories created along the way as you arrive at the airport for your onward journey.
